A Stellar MOTHER – Pearl Kasujja

When it comes to days that honour special relationships, Mother’s Day is one of the most, if not THE most, popular of such days because of all humans that add value to our lives – fathers, siblings, grandparents, friends – a mother is pretty special.

Mothers (at least the majority of them) are the embodiment of selfless love, bonding, dedication and devotion and to acknowledge and honour that role and presence, Mother’s Day is celebrated across more than 46 countries in the world.

Mothers are special every day. Why do we need a special day to celebrate them?

Many of us have watched that video where people think they are in an interview for a unique job position. The candidates all think that they are interviewing for the fancy-sounding ‘director of operations’ job. However, they are told that this position requires them to work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, no vacations, extended periods of standing up and bending over. The requirements went on that the ideal candidate would have to have a degree in finance, medicine and the culinary arts. Basically, they were interviewing for the position of a MOTHER. (if you haven’t watched it yet, look it up).

This pretty much summed up why mothers are special; they are unpaid chefs, personal assistants, chauffeurs, therapists, tutors, laundry and ironing masters for their children. All of this is unpaid and is often times underappreciated by the distinctly male-dominated society.

Admittedly, being a mother is a lifestyle choice and should not be equated to a fiscal figure nor should medals and trophies be handed out for breastfeeding, changing diapers or potty training – but a day to celebrate MOTHERS is surely in order.

Our own mum:

Just like parents who think their child is the best, I think – sorry, I KNOW – our mum is the best! She is selfless, so good-hearted, strong, understanding, funny … I can list every good attribute and she’d be it. Widowed at 32 years old, she raised nine children with barely a squint of tiredness, anger or pity. She always, always tries her hardest to make us and others happy, she protects fiercely and loves deeply. Our love and appreciation of her grows every single day especially now that we are all mothers too.

Others:

“My mum is the key piece in our family puzzle. She holds us together” – Pearl O.K, U.S.A

“My mum is my ride or die. Period!” – Julie E.R, Comoros Island

“I will to sum my mum up in a quote by Mitch Albom; ‘When you look into your mother’s eyes, you know that is the purest love you can find on this Earth.’ – Stella Kikoyo, U.K

“Trying to describe my feelings for my mum leaves me speechless – I’m just full of gratitude for all the hard work and unlimited love that she keeps giving.” – Jinan, Lebanon

“How our mum raised us alone after our dad died makes me respect and love her endlessly. She’s been a great example in raising my own two children. She’s my rock, my strength and my joy” – Pamela, Romania

Mother’s Day or Motherly Day?

A special round of applause for those mothers who may not necessarily have endured the pain of childbirth but have nonetheless mothered an adopted or abandoned child with no hesitation on colour, race, taboo, physical or mental health of the child. They may not have gone through those early days of continuous diaper changes, breastfeeding, two-hour night sleep routines but have held tiny hands that needed love, calmed nightmares, done homework, booked holidays, helped blow out candles on birthday cakes, seen prom dates and many more important milestones.

There’s no perfect way to reciprocate a mother’s love and sacrifice, other than with love itself. We may not take our mum for a movie or dinner on Mother’s Day but I celebrate her every second of every day – and boy does she bask in our attention 😉

Happy Mother’s Day
